Why 10 Strong Relationships Can Be Worth More Than 10,000 Followers
Everybody wants more followers.
1,000.
5,000.
10,000.
100,000.
We celebrate the number going up because it feels like proof we're growing.
But here's a question I've been asking myself:
What if we're measuring the wrong thing?
Would you rather have 10,000 people following you who barely know your name...
Or 10 people who know exactly who you are, what you do, who you help, and are willing to introduce you to someone else?
I'm taking the 10.
Every time.
Followers Are Not Relationships
There's nothing wrong with building an audience.
I want more people reading this blog.
I want more people watching the Network Marketing Insider Podcast.
I want my social media content reaching new people.
But reach is only the beginning.
Someone watching a 30-second video doesn't mean you have a relationship with them.
A Facebook friend isn't necessarily a friend.
A LinkedIn connection isn't necessarily a connection.
And a follower isn't necessarily someone who would recognize your name six months from now.
That's why I've started looking at online growth differently.
I don't just want to reach more people. I want to know more people.
There's a big difference.
One Person Can Create Multiple Opportunities
Think about some of the best opportunities you've had.
Did they really come from an algorithm?
Or did a person play a role?
Someone introduced you.
Someone recommended you.
Someone invited you.
Someone shared your content.
Someone asked you to collaborate.
Someone brought you onto a podcast.
Someone told another person:
"You need to talk to this guy."
That's the part of networking we underestimate.
One strong relationship doesn't represent one opportunity.
That person has their own network.
And their network has another network.
You don't need access to everybody.
Sometimes you just need to know the right person.
What Would Your Power 10 Look Like?
This is where the idea behind the Power 10 started making more and more sense to me.
Instead of telling someone:
"Go get 10,000 followers."
What if I challenged them to intentionally build relationships with 10 people?
Not prospects.
Not leads.
Not names on a spreadsheet.
Real relationships.
People you know.
People who know you.
People you genuinely want to help.
People who understand what you're building.
People you can call.
People you can introduce to someone else.
People who might introduce you.
That's a network.
And it's something a beginner can actually build.
You Don't Need to Be an Influencer
This matters especially for teachers and 9-to-5 professionals trying to build something online.
You might look at someone with 100,000 followers and think:
"How am I supposed to compete with that?"
You don't have to.
You don't need to become an influencer.
You don't need millions of views.
You don't need to spend your entire day making content.
You need to become known by the right people.
That's a completely different game.
And for most of us, it's a much more realistic one.
Content Helps People Discover You
I'm still a huge believer in content.
I've created podcast episodes, YouTube videos, blog posts, social posts, community content and more.
Content is an incredible tool because it allows people to discover you.
But I don't want the process to stop there.
I recently wrote about this in How to Turn Social Media Content Into Real Business Relationships.
Someone sees your content.
They comment.
You respond.
You check out what they're doing.
Maybe another conversation starts.
Eventually you connect.
That's when content becomes much more valuable.
You're moving from:
VIEW → CONVERSATION → CONNECTION → RELATIONSHIP → OPPORTUNITY
The view started it.
The relationship is where things get interesting.
Your Power 10 Shouldn't Be 10 People You Can Sell To
This is important.
The Power 10 isn't:
"Find 10 people who might buy my stuff."
That completely misses the point.
Somebody in your Power 10 might never spend a dollar with you.
They might introduce you to someone who becomes a podcast guest.
Another might know somebody who needs your service.
Someone else might invite you to speak.
Another could become a collaborator.
Someone might teach you something that completely changes your business.
And one might simply become a great friend.
You don't know where the opportunity will come from.
That's why the relationship has to come first.
Become Valuable to Your 10
Everybody asks:
"How do I find the right people?"
I think there's another question that's just as important:
"Why would the right people want me in their network?"
That's where things change.
Help people.
Listen.
Introduce people.
Share someone's work.
Comment thoughtfully.
Remember what someone told you.
Follow up.
Be the person who adds value without immediately asking:
"What's in it for me?"
That's how trust gets built.
I wrote more about this in How to Build Trust Online Without Being Salesy because I believe it's one of the biggest opportunities people are missing online.
You don't have to pitch everybody.
Become someone worth knowing.
Ten Relationships Can Compound
Imagine you intentionally build one meaningful relationship this week.
Then another.
And another.
Eventually you have 10.
But it doesn't stop there.
Those people know people.
They introduce you.
You make another connection.
Your original 10 become 20.
Twenty become 30.
Meanwhile, your content keeps working.
Your podcast keeps working.
Your blog keeps working.
Your community keeps growing.
This is where relationships compound.
You aren't starting from zero every morning.
You're building a network.
Social Media Still Matters
I'm not saying delete Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram or YouTube.
Quite the opposite.
Use them.
I've written about this in Community vs Social Media: Which Builds More Income?
Social media gives us something incredibly valuable:
Discovery.
It allows somebody across the country—or across the world—to find you.
But instead of making follower count the finish line, make it the starting point.
Social media gets attention.
Content builds familiarity.
Conversation creates connection.
Community strengthens relationships.
Relationships create opportunities.
That's the ecosystem.
Start With One Person Today
Don't worry about finding all 10 today.
Find one.
Look at someone who's been interacting with your content.
Someone you've met inside a community.
Someone from a networking event.
Someone whose posts you've been following.
Learn what they actually do.
Start a conversation.
Don't pitch.
Don't send your link.
Don't ask them to join anything.
Get to know them.
Then do it again.
That's how you build a Power 10.
Not with a giant marketing campaign.
One conversation at a time.

Many of the relationships I've built online have eventually led to conversations on the Network Marketing Insider Podcast.
That's one reason I love podcasting.
It's not just content.
It's an excuse to sit down with another person, learn their story, understand what they're building and share that conversation with other people.
Check out the latest episodes, subscribe, and connect with the guests who resonate with you.
Your next great relationship could start there.

But don't join another community just to become another name on the member list.
Get involved.
Meet people.
Help someone.
Have conversations.
Build relationships.
Community only works when we participate.

The same rule applies there too.
Don't just chase links and commissions.
Learn.
Connect.
Recommend things you actually believe can help someone.
That's how affiliate income and relationship marketing can work together.

🔥 BUILD YOUR POWER 10 IN 30 DAYS
You don't need thousands of followers.
You need the right 10 relationships.
Inside the Academy, we're putting that into action through a simple Daily Builder Loop:
POST 1 → HELP 2 → CONNECT 1
Create something.
Help people.
Start a conversation.
Then repeat.
Your goal isn't another 1,000 followers.
It's 10 meaningful relationships in 30 days.
And here's your challenge before you leave this article:
Who is ONE person you should know better 30 days from now than you do today?
Start there.
Because your next opportunity probably isn't hiding inside another 1,000 followers.
It might be hiding inside one conversation.
Remember:
Action Creates Momentum.
Connections Create Opportunities.
