Community vs Social Media: Which Builds More Income?

Here's something I've been thinking about lately:

Would you rather have 10,000 followers or 100 people who actually know who you are?

The obvious answer used to be 10,000 followers.

More followers meant more reach.

More reach meant more money.

At least that was the idea.

But after spending years networking, creating content, hosting a podcast, building communities, and experimenting with different ways to create income online, I'm not convinced that's true anymore.

Social media and online communities do two very different jobs.

And if you're trying to build an online business, understanding the difference matters.

Social Media Is Great for Attention

I'm definitely not anti-social media.

I use it constantly.

Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and other platforms give us the ability to reach people we'd probably never meet otherwise.

One post can introduce you to hundreds or thousands of people.

A video can continue getting discovered months later.

Social media is incredible for getting someone's attention.

But there's a problem.

You're competing with everything else on someone's screen.

They see your post.

Then a video.

Then an advertisement.

Then someone's vacation pictures.

Then another creator.

And you're gone.

That's why I look at social media as the top of the relationship, not necessarily the destination.

Community Is Where Relationships Get Deeper

A community is different.

Someone made a decision to come inside.

They're not randomly scrolling past you anymore.

They're participating.

They're asking questions.

They're attending calls.

They're meeting other members.

They're learning.

Most importantly, they're becoming part of something.

That's where trust can grow much faster.

And trust matters if you're trying to build income online.

Followers Don't Automatically Equal Income

This is where people get caught up in vanity numbers.

10,000 followers looks impressive.

But how many of those people would respond if you messaged them?

How many would attend something you hosted?

How many would recommend you?

How many actually know what you do?

Compare that to a smaller community where 50 people consistently interact with you.

They've attended your calls.

They've watched your content.

You've helped them.

They've helped each other.

Who do you think is more likely to buy, refer someone, join another program, become an affiliate, or collaborate?

I'll take relationships over follower count all day.

So Which Builds More Income?

I actually think this is the wrong question.

It's not:

Community OR social media?

It's:

How do I get social media and community working together?

Social media creates attention.

Content creates curiosity.

Conversations create connection.

Community deepens the relationship.

Trust creates opportunities.

That's the ecosystem.

Someone might discover a Facebook post today.

Tomorrow they read one of your blog articles.

Next week they watch your podcast.

Eventually they join your community.

Then they attend a live event or Connection Meetup.

Now you're no longer some random person they saw online.

There's a relationship.

That's incredibly difficult to replicate with social media alone.

Community Gives You More Ways to Create Income

This is another reason I'm so bullish on communities.

The income doesn't have to come from one thing.

A strong community can create opportunities through:

  • Memberships

  • Affiliate marketing

  • Coaching

  • Courses

  • Referrals

  • Partnerships

  • Events

  • Services

  • Collaborations

  • Sponsorships

But here's the key:

Don't build the community just to extract money from people.

Build something people actually want to participate in.

Help them.

Connect them.

Give them reasons to come back.

When people win because they're part of your ecosystem, monetization becomes much more natural.

This Is Why I'm Building the TLP Projects Together

This is also why I'm not looking at everything I'm building as separate projects anymore.

They're connected.

The Podcast + Blog + Content create attention.

Conversations create connections.

Connection Meetups build deeper relationships.

Connection Creator Academy gives people a home to learn and take action.

Affiliate marketing creates another path to monetization.

And ultimately, the goal is helping people create opportunities that can lead to Beyond Bills Income.

One piece feeds the next.

That's the bigger picture.

Instead of trying to make every Facebook post generate a sale, I'm building assets and relationships that can continue working together.

What Should You Build First?

If you're just getting started, don't disappear from social media and immediately build a paid community.

Start by becoming useful.

Create content.

Start conversations.

Help people.

Build relationships.

Pay attention to the problems people consistently talk about.

Then ask yourself:

Could I create a place where these people could continue learning, connecting, and helping each other?

That's where community becomes powerful.

You aren't building an empty room and desperately trying to fill it.

You're giving existing relationships somewhere to grow.

The Long Game Wins

Social media might give you a viral post tomorrow.

That's awesome.

Use it.

But I'd rather build something that still matters three years from now.

A blog article can keep getting discovered.

A podcast episode can keep getting watched.

A relationship can create an opportunity you never expected.

And a strong community can become the place where all of those things come together.

Attention is valuable.

But attention without relationships disappears quickly.

Build the audience.

Then build the relationships.

Then give those relationships a home.

That's where things get interesting.
