When I first reached out to Brian Carruthers, I honestly wasn’t sure he’d say yes. I had engaged on one of his posts, took a shot, and asked if he’d join me on the podcast.
He replied: "Sure, let’s set it up."
A simple reminder to everyone watching: You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. Opportunities show up when you’re willing to ask.
What followed was an incredible conversation about entrepreneurship, personal growth, consistency, and what it really takes to escape the “time-for-money trap.”
Meet Brian Carruthers: Entrepreneur, Author, Industry Leader
When asked how he introduces himself, Brian keeps it simple:
“I’m a big proponent of wealth building and entrepreneurship. I help people get unstuck.”
After grinding for years in real estate—working seven days a week, constantly fearing the next dry spell—Brian discovered network marketing and built a business that now spans over 420,000 people. He’s been in the profession 31 years, with 27 years full-time, earning well over $25 million with his company.
He’s also authored industry-shaping books including:
Untrapped: Freedom Manifesto
Building an Empire
Exit Interviews
Got Game
And multiple leadership and recruiting programs used across the industry
But what makes Brian different is his mission:
“I want to live a significant life. I want success stories because I played a part in someone winning.”
The Difference Between Time Freedom and Loving the Grind
People often say they want freedom, but Brian breaks it down simply:
“You can’t have time freedom unless you’re financially free. If you have to keep giving away your time to get new money, you’re not free.”
He explains the trap many fall into:
Some say they “love what they do,” but if they stop, income drops to zero.
Others say they make great money… but it stops the moment they stop working.
That’s not freedom—that’s being paid well for being trapped.
Warren Buffett said it best:
“If you don’t find a way to make money while you sleep, you’ll work until you die.”
Network marketing, when done consistently and correctly, builds assets that pay you beyond the hours you put in.
The Power of Staying the Course
Brian has stayed with the same company for 27 years, and people always ask him why.
His answer is refreshing:
“It’s easy to stay when you’re making money—but I also made the company my company. I treated it like my baby.”
He’s had ups and downs:
His #2 leader quit.
His own mentor started another company.
People switched companies for “shiny objects.”
But he stayed.
Because consistency beats talent, personality, and hype every time.
Brian uses the seed analogy:
“When you plant a seed, you don’t see anything for weeks or months—but it’s working underground. Your business works the same way.”
The Hard Truth: People Quit Too Soon
During our conversation, Brian shared something powerful:
He interviewed hundreds of people who quit network marketing, and found 35 common reasons people give up.
He put all of them—and the solutions—into his book Exit Interviews.
His goal?
“I don’t want people giving up on their dreams for reasons that can be solved.”
Most people don’t fail because the model doesn’t work. They fail because:
They’re inconsistent
They expect fast results
They get distracted
They haven’t developed themselves yet
Brian puts it bluntly:
“If you’re not willing to spend even 20 minutes a day building your dream, you have no right to complain about the lack of results.”
Preparation + Opportunity = Explosion
Brian’s first company didn’t make him rich. But it made him ready.
He attended meetings weekly, invested in personal development, and learned what worked and what didn’t.
After nearly four years of preparation, he joined his current company—and earned $248,000 in his first year.
Not because he was lucky. Because he was prepared.
“There’s always a backstory. Nobody makes six figures in their first year unless they’ve already done the personal work.”
Writing Books to Serve the Industry
Brian didn’t become an author to build a brand. He became an author to fill a gap.
There was no manual—no complete A-to-Z blueprint—so he created one.
His first edition of Building an Empire took 18 months to write. Every time he experienced something new in the field, he added another chapter. Eventually, there was nothing left to add.
During COVID, the industry shifted again. He added nine new chapters and released
The Next Level Edition.
Today, his books, recruiting tools, and leadership trainings are used by teams across the world.
Because Brian believes knowledge shouldn’t go to the grave.
G.A.M.E.: The Formula for Success
While preparing for an event in Chicago, Brian created the acronym GAME:
Great Associations
Mentors
Environment
Network marketing gives you all three.
“Get around five broke people—you’ll be the sixth. Get around five millionaires—you’ll be the sixth.”
The business model is built on mentorship. Top earners help you because they get paid to. You grow because the environment demands it.
That’s why Brian turned GAME into a booklet people now order by the hundreds for prospects.
Does Personal Branding Really Matter?
The internet is full of loud personalities preaching “build a brand or you won’t succeed.”
Brian disagrees.
“You don’t need a big personality or big influence. You just need to be the kind of leader people want to follow.”
He admits:
He doesn’t want to live on social media
He’s more introverted than people think
He prefers golf, fishing, cards, and time with his kids over spotlight
And yet…He has built one of the biggest organizations in the industry.
The lesson?
Character > Personality Leadership > Branding Consistency > Viral moments
Legacy Over Income
Brian hasn’t needed to work for nearly 20 years. But he still prospects, still recruits, still trains.
Why?
“I still want to be an example. I don’t want to tell people what I used to do. I want them to see what I do now.”
He’s more focused on significance than success:
Helping families win
Creating stories
Leaving a legacy
Passing on what he knows
He doesn’t want his wisdom to die with him.
And that’s exactly why this conversation matters.
Final Takeaway: Consistency Is the Great Equalizer
If you’re building a business—network marketing or anything else—Brian’s message is clear:
Stay focused
Stop chasing shiny objects
Develop yourself
Be consistent daily
Build assets, not traps
Follow the model
And give yourself enough time to grow
Your seed is growing—even when you don’t see it yet.
