From Procrastination to Confidence: 5 Powerful Lessons from Derek

In a episode of the Network Marketing Insider Podcast, I sat down with Derek, a transformational hypnotherapist who specializes in helping people supercharge their confidence.

What started as a conversation about confidence quickly turned into a masterclass on procrastination, mindset, self-worth, and why so many people stay stuck—especially in online business and network marketing.

Here are 5 powerful takeaways from our conversation that you can apply immediately.

1. Procrastination Isn’t Laziness — It’s Fear

One of the biggest myths Derek dismantled is that procrastination means you’re lazy. In reality, it usually comes from one (or more) of these four issues:

  • Fear of failure

  • Excessive perfectionism

  • Low energy levels

  • Lack of focus or clarity

Most people aren’t avoiding the work—they’re avoiding the feelings attached to the work.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not broken. You’re human.

2. The STRIP Method to Beat Procrastination

Derek shared a simple but powerful framework called STRIP, designed to help you move forward without overwhelm:

S – Smaller Tasks Break big goals into small, manageable steps.

T – Timeline Give yourself realistic deadlines for each small task.

R – Remove Distractions Turn off the TV, silence notifications, and eliminate anything pulling you away.

I – Inspire Surround yourself with people, content, and communities that motivate you—and hold you accountable.

P – Perfectionism Let it go. Perfection doesn’t exist. Progress does.

This method applies to everything—from starting a business to creating content to simply showing up more consistently.

3. Confidence Comes From Action, Not Waiting

A huge mindset shift from the episode:

Confidence doesn’t come before action. It comes because of action.

Many people say:

“I’ll start once I feel more confident.”

But confidence is built by doing the thing—even imperfectly. Whether it’s recording your first video, posting online, or reaching out to someone new, movement creates momentum.

4. Your Energy and Health Directly Impact Your Success

Low energy fuels procrastination.

Derek emphasized that confidence grows when you:

  • Eat better

  • Move your body

  • Take care of your mindset

You don’t need a strict diet or extreme routine. Small lifestyle changes compound into higher energy, better focus, and stronger confidence.

When you feel better physically, you show up better mentally.

5. Community Is the Shortcut Most People Ignore

One of the most powerful parts of the conversation was around community.

Trying to build alone is exhausting. Growth accelerates when you’re surrounded by:

  • Positive people

  • Accountability partners

  • Encouragement instead of judgment

This is why platforms like Skool and aligned communities matter. When you’re in the right room, consistency becomes easier—and quitting becomes harder.

Final Thought: One Small Step Changes Everything

Derek summed it up perfectly:

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step.”

You don’t need to overhaul your life today. You just need to take one step—and then another. Join his Skool Today

As a mindset coach and author of Doing What You Know, I 100% agree with Derek! The only thing I might add is to consider investing in mentorship. That's what turned my world around! By the way, I'd love to have Derek on my podcast! Please pass that request on to him. Ray Thigpen https://www.doingwhatyouknow.com

Love this piece.

I have always been the type that likes to complete task in one session and have had to train myself to micro-task and perfectionism is a bad place to stay stuck. I was there for much of the past 12 years being scared inside my shell that my best wouldn't be good enough because I didn't feel good about me. I hadn't since my nervous breakdown and now I am getting all of that in the past.
