From Comodes to Commissions: 7 Golden Nuggets on Building a Lasting Network Marketing Business

On a recent episode of the Network Marketing Insider Podcast, I had the privilege of sitting down with Laura Ruckle—known in the business world as Sparkle by Laura.

Her journey from cleaning houses as a single mom to building multiple six-figure incomes in business is packed with wisdom for anyone serious about network marketing, affiliate marketing, or building online income streams.

This wasn’t fluff. It was real talk about struggle, systems, consistency, mindset, and relationships.

Let’s unpack 7 golden nuggets from this powerful conversation.

1. Turn Your Pain Into Purpose

Laura didn’t start at the top.

She was a single mom of three, cleaning houses to survive. When she developed an autoimmune disease that left her bedridden more often than not, she had a choice:

  • Accept the diagnosis as her identity

  • Or fight for a different future

She chose the second.

Her health journey led her back into network marketing—but this time, she didn’t dabble. She committed.

Lesson: Your struggle can become your story. And your story can become someone else’s solution.

2. Systems Create Freedom

Laura credits much of her early success to reading Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki.

One concept hit her hard: duplication.

Just like McDonald’s can produce the same burger anywhere in the world, she built a cleaning business with repeatable systems. Same rags. Same process. Same results.

She scaled that business to over six figures annually as a single mom.

Then she applied the same principle to network marketing.

Golden Nugget: If you don’t have a system, you don’t have a business. You have a hobby.

3. Build a Personal Brand That Sticks

“Sparkle by Laura” wasn’t just a cute nickname.

It became a recognizable trademark. It started with sparkling homes… and evolved into helping people put the sparkle back into their lives.

Your name is forgettable. Your brand is memorable.

When someone says:

“Oh yeah, that’s Sparkle by Laura.”

That’s positioning.

Ask yourself: What do people think of when they hear your name?

4. Success Leaves Clues — Follow Them

If someone has already achieved what you want…

Stop reinventing the wheel.

Laura shared this blunt advice:

Don’t question someone who’s already done it successfully. Follow the blueprint.

When her employees tried to “improve” her system, she redirected them back to the process that worked.

The same applies in network marketing.

  • Follow your upline’s proven steps.

  • Plug into training.

  • Execute.

Innovation comes later. Duplication comes first.

5. Consistency Beats Intensity

One of the strongest moments in the episode:

“If your stories are empty, your business is empty.”

Social media is today’s storefront.

Laura posts:

  • 3+ stories daily

  • 1–2 feed posts consistently

Not because she “feels like it.” Because it’s part of the job.

Think about it this way:

If a restaurant randomly decided not to open some days…Would it survive?

Consistency builds trust. Trust builds income.

6. Focus on Activities — Not Outcomes

This one is massive.

When Laura said it, I had to pause.

“Stop focusing on the outcome and focus on the activities.”

Most people obsess over:

  • How much they made

  • Who signed up

  • Why someone didn’t join

Instead, focus on:

  • Conversations

  • Follow-ups

  • Posting

  • Learning

  • Showing up

The outcome is the harvest. The activities are the seeds.

Plant enough seeds consistently, and the harvest is inevitable.

7. This Is a Self-Taught Career — Treat It Like One

Network marketing is not:

  • A lottery ticket

  • A spillover dream

  • A get-rich-quick scheme

It’s a self-taught career.

You wouldn’t expect to become:

  • A lawyer overnight

  • A doctor overnight

  • A teacher overnight

So why expect instant mastery here?

Invest in:

  • Courses

  • Mentorship

  • Skill development

  • Communication

Get in the rooms where growth happens.

Personal development isn’t optional in this industry. It’s the foundation.

The Bigger Picture: Relationships Over Rush

One theme kept surfacing throughout the episode:

Slow down.

Stop chasing the sale. Start building the relationship.

This is a global opportunity. I’ve had calls with people from Indiana, New Jersey, South Africa—you name it.

When you build genuine connection:

  • You build trust.

  • You build longevity.

  • You build residual income.

Plant seeds today. Harvest tomorrow.

The big takeaway here is consistent determined work will build your business over fly by night sales. You need regulsr customers not customers regularly to have a life changing income.
